According to a survey by Insa, a total of 71% of the German population view the asylum policy of former Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) negatively. Hermann Binkert, managing director of Insa explained that the popularity of opening borders has suffered a severe setback since 2015. Nine years ago, 46% of respondents rated this policy as a good one.
Of those surveyed, only 23% of respondents still regard Merkel’s 2015 asylum policy as positive. 18% thought it was a good policy then, and still think so. 28% approved of the policy then, and now disapprove. Only 5% of survey participants said they rejected the opening of the border in 2015 at the time, but now view it positively. Around 6% did not answer the question.
