Writer / Journalist

The European Conservative is looking for Writers / Journalists (full-time) to join our growing global media efforts. In this Brussels-based role, you will be part of our News and Analysis team. You will be variously responsible for producing feature news stories and analytical pieces, as well as other regular content for our website.
Your primary responsibilities will include:
- Researching and writing daily news stories every day, focusing mainly on Europe but including relevant and news-worthy global and international topics.
- Preparing brief analyses drawing from third-party memoranda and reports, and incorporating commentary and insights from outside experts and pundits.
- Research-driven investigative reporting could be possible. Depending on performance and suitability, this could become your primary task.
- Tracking legislation and activities in the European institutions in Brussels.
- Developing sources in and building contacts from a variety of organizations.
- Attending press conferences and other newsworthy events.
- Assisting with the preparation of content for our weekly e-newsletter.
- Working closely in collaboration with other members of the News and Analysis Group.
- Research-driven investigative reporting could be possible. Depending on performance and suitability, this could become your primary task.
Other responsibilities may include:
- Conducting on-camera interviews on behalf of the organization.
- ‘Live’ online reporting or real-time blogging when covering important events.
- Drafting short book reviews on occasion for the quarterly print edition.
- Assisting with uploading and publishing content to our website’s CMS, as needed.
- Contributing to the creation of content, copy, and other promotional materials to be used in online and social media campaigns.
- Assisting with the creation and development of materials, scripts, and texts to be used in the production of audio-visual materials for the website.
- Attending events on behalf of the organization.
Desired qualifications, knowledge, and skills:
- Experience as a reporter/journalist.
- Knowledge of European policy and politics.
- Excellent spoken and written communications in English; fluency in or knowledge of other major European languages useful.
- Creative, flexible, resourceful, with an eye for detail, respect for deadlines, and a “nose for news.”
- Strong organizational and time management skills. Ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent judgment and professional attitude and appearance.
- Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team.
- Fluency in English is mandatory; other major European languages are useful.
- Podcast and video experience highly desirable.
Requirements:
- EU citizenship or legal right to work in Europe.
- The position is Brussels-based.
- 3 month trial period.
