A Palestinian man sought by Belgian police for having declared he “wanted to die as a martyr by explosion” was arrested on Wednesday, October 24th at a hotel in Anderlecht, a municipality in the Brussels Capital Region, Belgian media report.  

He has been detained for questioning.

The man allegedly said he had learned his entire family had died in the Gaza Strip .

Having applied for asylum on September 26th, the man was supposed to report to authorities the next day, but never showed up. He resurfaced yesterday and  told an official body he intended to commit suicide by blowing himself up. 

Since last Monday’s terrorist attack in Brussels in which two Swedes were murdered, Belgian authorities have kept the threat level at 3 (meaning the possibility of an act of terrorism happening is deemed serious) nation-wide.
