The European Parliament formally submitted a lawsuit against the European Commission. According to the EP, the Commission failed to trigger a new power linking EU funding to a country’s respect for the rule of law.

The new mechanism would allow the EU to suspend payments to its member countries if they seem to breach rule-of-law and that affects the bloc’s financial interest, Politico.eu reports.

The Commission refrained from using the mechanism until now. “We expect the European Commission to act in a consistent manner and live up to what President von der Leyen stated during our last plenary discussion on this subject,” European Parliament President David Sassoli said.
