Court documents filed on Tuesday, June 20th reveal that Hunter Biden, the son of current U.S. President Joe Biden, has pleaded guilty in two separate cases after negotiating a plea deal with the Justice Department following a five-year-long investigation that began in 2018.
The first case revolves around an in-depth investigation into Hunter Biden’s finances and found that the 53-year-old had failed to pay around $100,000 of income taxes in 2017 and in 2018, a report from the New York Post states.
Biden’s finances have been under scrutiny for years due to his connections to the Ukrainian natural resource company Burisma, where he and his partner Devon Archer were each paid a startling $83,333 per month for what was described as a ceremonial role in the company between April of 2014 and November of 2015.
Mykola Zlochevsky, the founder of Burisma Holdings, is said to have hired Biden purely based on his name and connection with then-Vice President Joe Biden as Zlochevsky was facing investigation at the time over tax violations, money laundering, and other charges.
Hunter Biden’s activities were further called into question just prior to the 2020 presidential election when a copy of his laptop emerged and included emails and texts in which he alluded to having to pay a cut of his income to someone he labelled “the big guy,” who many have asserted is likely President Biden himself.
US Navy veteran Tony Bobulinskim, a former associate of Hunter Biden, claimed that the “big guy” was President Biden, despite the president’s repeated claims that he had no involvement with his son’s business dealings.
The New York Post, who broke the Hunter Biden laptop story, listed a dozen times they claim that President Biden had a role in Hunter’s business affairs, many of which involved businesspeople from China as well as Ukraine.
A Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) document that emerged earlier this month allegedly states that President Biden, while serving as Vice President, may have received as much as $5 million as part of a bribery scheme.
The form, which is dated from June 30th of 2020, alleges that the FBI was in contact with a “highly credible” source who spoke to them of confidential meetings and conversations with a Burisma executive over the period of several years.
According to Fox News, the FD-1023 form is used by the FBI and notes information from confidential sources that are unverified.
Last week, New York Post reporter Steven Nelson confronted President Biden on the matter saying, “Why did the Ukraine FBI informant file refer to you as the ‘Big Guy,’ President Biden? Why is that term continuously applied?” President Biden responded by simply saying, ”Why do you ask such a dumb question?”
Hunter Biden has also entered an agreement regarding a felony charge of illegally possessing a firearm as a drug user, lying on a form in 2018 about his long-standing addiction to drugs when he purchased a pistol.
The gun charges came after Hallie Biden, the widow of Hunter’s brother Beau, who later became Hunter’s lover, threw away his handgun into a trash can in 2018 outside a grocery store across from a High School in Wilmington, Delaware.
When Hallie Biden returned to retrieve the handgun from the trash can she found that it was gone, leading to Delaware police and the U.S. Secret Service becoming involved, fearing the gun may be used in a crime. However, a man who collects recyclable items from the grocery store’s trash cans later handed in the firearm after discovering it.
Hunter Biden’s lawyer Christopher Clark has suggested that the deal marks the end of the investigations into his client saying, “I know Hunter believes it is important to take responsibility for these mistakes he made during a period of turmoil and addiction in his life.
The case marks a stark difference from the indictment against former President Donald J. Trump, who had his Florida home Mar-a-Lago publicly raided by the FBI in August of 2022, leading to Trump being charged with 37 felonies relating to the handling of classified documents and other charges earlier this month.
Mr. Trump spoke out about the Hunter Biden deal on his social media platform Truth Social saying:
Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy also slammed the deal saying, “If you are the president’s leading political opponent, the DOJ tries to literally put you in jail and give you prison time. If you are the president’s son, you get a sweetheart deal.”
