While the freedom to have an abortion is now guaranteed by the Constitution, the freedom of the health care provider not to carry out an abortion is not.
Speakers from across politics and academia gathered in Brussels to discuss the looming threat of abortion being inserted into the EU Charter, contrasting it with Europe’s philosophical and religious roots.
The compromised wording passed by the senators at least has the merit of refusing to set in stone any ‘right’ to abortion. But another fundamental freedom must be preserved, the freedom of conscience of practitioners to carry out an abortion or not.
