The F-16s are not expected to see battle until early next year, meaning they will play no role in Ukraine’s ongoing counteroffensive.
Since F-16s are capable of carrying nuclear weapons, their deployment in Ukraine could cause “catastrophic consequences” for NATO, the Russian foreign minister warned.
Still no pledges in sight to deliver a single aircraft to Kyiv, but the training of UAF pilots could begin as soon as the fighter jet coalition reaches an agreement on the location.
Due to the use of trenches and the ferocious fighting which exacted a heavy toll on both sides, the battle of Bakhmut has drawn comparisons with WWI’s battle of Verdun.
With the U.S. president’s approval, fellow NATO allies can also begin the process of delivering F-16s to Ukraine later this year.
