Poland Celebrates Independence Day Amid Conservative Calls to Defend Democracy
President Karol Nawrocki and PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński warned about threats to democracy, rule of law, and sovereignty.

President Karol Nawrocki and PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński warned about threats to democracy, rule of law, and sovereignty.

The PiS leader also warned that arresting former justice minister Zbigniew Ziobro, who is seriously ill, would be equivalent to a death sentence.

The Hungarian PM accused his Polish counterpart, Donald Tusk of betraying patriotic values in an interview with Polish media.

Although the Polish conservative leader denied discussing a potential coalition, members of the Tusk cabinet are panicking.
President-elect Karol Nawrocki stated “It is time to abandon the hysteria, to stop undermining Polish democracy.”

“A government that fears free media turns to censorship,” former PM Morawiecki said, as only weeks left until the presidential election.

The lawfare waged against the three opposition members of parliament is just another chapter in Tusk’s anti-democratic playbook.

Tusk’s opponents called the move by the state an attempt to “eliminate the only strong opposition party.”

An advisory body for the Council of Europe has come out strongly against the law, noting that its approval this close to Poland’s general elections this fall would create an uneven playing field.

Kaczyński gave a speech in which he offered praise for the Spanish party, pointing out how much it has in common with his own platform.
