Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is considering making a trip to Brussels this week, possibly Thursday, February 9th, Politico reports.
According to the news site, several sources briefed on the discussions between Zelensky and EU leaders said that tentative preparations are underway to host the Ukrainian president in Brussels this week, including arrangements for Zelensky to address the EU Parliament and meet with member states’ ministers over lunch as part of a scheduled EU council meeting.
The EU Commission has long made it clear it would welcome a visit from Zelensky, but the Ukrainian president has made a point of not leaving the country since the war started. He made one exception in December, to make an official visit to Washington to plead for additional arms and financing.
The report of the possible visit to the EU’s institutions follows on the heels of an EU-Ukraine summit in Kyiv last week, the first such summit to be held in an active war zone.
Ukraine is not only seeking support in repelling the Russian invasion but has also been hoping to be granted express entry into the EU.
