Approving Teresa Ribera, the Spanish nominee for the European Commission, would be a betrayal of the voters in the June EU elections and a fatal concession to the autocratic government of Pedro Sánchez.
Ribera, a member of Sánchez’ hardline socialist party, has been nominated to become the next Executive Vice President for Clean, Just and Competitive Transition. All political indicators point to her receiving the most powerful portfolio in the next Commission below Ursula von der Leyen, directing the green transition, competition, and energy policy.
This constitutes an existential risk to the European economy and is an insult to all the Europeans who vote against excessive green policies.
The selection of Ribera also flies in the face of the EU’s commitment to the rule of law, considering the multiple violations by the Sánchez regime. Her nomination constitutes an attempt by EU elites to pander to the extreme Left and to siphon power away from national governments to technocrats in the face of a growing populist backlash to failing EU policies.
We take exception to centre-right parties in the European People’s Party (EPP) that may lend Ribera crucial support for a vote to approve her by three EU parliamentary committees, Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI), Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON), and Industry, Research, and Energy (ITRE).
Even before taking up the role. Ribera has committed herself to a far-left agenda, opposing moves to embrace nuclear by EU member states as well as voicing her public opposition to conservative parties and voters.
Behind the scenes, EU Commissioners have inordinate amounts of power to influence the policy direction of the bloc. Ribera has committed to cementing the EU’s left-wing drift with Eurocrats failing in their duty by not reprimanding the Sánchez regime. Our campaign will focus on targeting EPP MEPs, as we believe it is crucial for them to reject the agenda of the far Left and Sánchez.
To that aim, we have initiated a petitioning campaign and offline actions. It is incumbent on parties of the center-right to respect their voter base and reject Ribera and all her socialist policies, and it is important that parties within the EPP group do not take their conservative voter bases for granted, especially in an era of rising populism.
The fact that 46,000 people from across the EU have signed the petition is a sign that conservative voters are ready to mobilise to advance their interests in Brussels.
Beginning today, we will be campaigning both in Brussels and across Europe to bring down pressure on MEPs through public petitions and email initiatives to their offices reminding them that any betrayal of their core values of freedom will cost them support.
Teresa Ribera will appear before the European Parliament on Tuesday, November 12th, at 18.30 for questioning from MEPs on the ENVI, ECON, and ITRE committees.
