Fear of sexual crime in Sweden leaves many women feeling unsafe, with one in three reporting concerns.

Ebba Busch, Sweden’s deputy prime minister and chairperson of Christian Democrats (KD), has announced a proposal aimed at strengthening protections for women and children in response to the surging sexual crimes in Sweden.

In a post on X, Busch stated that “women and children should feel safe” in Sweden, while “pedophiles and rapists should feel unsafe.” She argued that fear of sexual crime contributes to insecurity, noting that every third woman in Sweden reports feeling unsafe when walking outdoors in the evenings, even in their own neighborhoods.

The Christian Democrats propose that pedophiles and individuals convicted of aggravated rape be required to undergo chemical castration in order to be eligible for parole.

The party also calls for mandatory treatment programs as a condition for parole, the elimination of automatic parole, and a supervision period following release equivalent to at least one third of the original prison term.

Busch described the issue as one of freedom and systemic failure.
