German chancellor Friedrich Merz announced on Tuesday that Berlin will introduce limits on the number of Ukrainian men seeking asylum, while actively supporting their repatriation to assist in the defense of their homeland.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, Merz emphasized that the two nations would coordinate closely on this policy shift:
We will work in lockstep with Ukraine on issues regarding Ukrainian citizens who have sought asylum in our country to facilitate their return home. … It is extremely important that these men are on the ground and helping their country.
