French president Emmanuel Macron will host a video call with European leaders this week to push for a coordinated EU approach to restricting social media access for minors, his office said on Tuesday.

The call, scheduled for Thursday, will include Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez and representatives from Italy, the Netherlands, and Ireland, alongside European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen. A final list of participants is expected to be confirmed ahead of the meeting.

Paris is seeking to build momentum for bloc-wide action, as several member states move to tighten rules on children’s use of digital platforms. France has already advanced plans to curb social media access for those under 15 as part of a broader push to regulate screen time among minors.

“The main goal is to act in a coordinated manner and push the Commission, in the positive sense of the term, to move ahead at the same pace as member states,” a French presidential aide said.
