A man suspected of shooting dead six child welfare workers at a shelter for mothers and children in northern Germany has died by suicide in prison.
The 45-year-old suspect, identified in German media as Fatih Khan G., was found dead in his cell early on Tuesday, Lower Saxony’s justice ministry said.
Officials said there were no indications that anyone else was involved in his death. His relatives and the families of those killed have been informed.
Four women and two men were killed when the gunman opened fire at the shelter in Stade on June 29. A seventh person was wounded but survived.
The suspect had arrived for an appointment to discuss future care arrangements for his three-month-old daughter. The baby and her 34-year-old mother were present but unharmed.
Police arrested the man following a short car chase. A 65-year-old woman with close connections to his family was allegedly driving the getaway vehicle.
According to Der Spiegel, the suspect had previously been accused of shaking his daughter after doctors found injuries consistent with such abuse.
He also allegedly threatened staff at the medical centre where the child was treated, although the resulting police investigation was later dropped.
