More than 1,500 applicants have reapplied for asylum in Germany since border controls were tightened in May this year, despite having previously been denied entry or asylum.

The German government has disclosed that since May 2025, a total of 1,582 cases have been recorded in which migrants submitted new asylum applications after being turned away at the border.

The renewed attempts come after Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt ordered stricter border checks, instructing police to reject asylum seekers who lack valid documents or arrive from a safe third country or another European Union member state, with exceptions for particularly vulnerable individuals.

The parliamentary response noted that despite the rejections, the number of repeat applications remains significant, continuing to strain Germany’s asylum system. While Dobrindt has defended the tougher controls, their effectiveness is increasingly being questioned.

According to government data, by October 31, authorities had registered more than 32,000 illegal entries, while police figures indicate that fewer than 1,000 asylum seekers were turned back during the same period, and overall asylum applications have not declined. as At the last count—on October 31st, 2025—some 934,553 foreign nationals with rejected asylum applications were known to be living in the country.
