Greece’s main airline, Aegean, has cancelled multiple flights, primarily to and from Athens, after a “technical issue affecting the radio frequency systems of the Hellenic Aviation Service Provider” reduced airspace capacity on Sunday.
Several flights were rerouted: planes bound for Athens landed in Rome or Dubrovnik, while SAS flights to Thessaloniki were diverted to Budapest, Transavia flights from Amsterdam landed in Tirana and a flight from Vilnius to Crete was redirected to Larnaca, Cyprus.
Other carriers have also been affected. EasyJet cited air traffic control restrictions for cancellations from Manchester and Ryanair suspended flights from Athens to Malta, Rome, and Bologna.
Athens airport said it had begun a gradual release of flights as capacity allowed, while efforts to fully resolve the technical issue continue. Passengers are entitled under EU rules to rerouting, meals, and accommodation until their flights can proceed.
