Germany’s right-wing populist AfD on Tuesday, May 6th, called for a fresh general election after a shock vote in parliament saw conservative leader Friedrich Merz miss a majority to become chancellor.

“Merz should step aside and the way should be cleared for a general election,” Alternative für Deautschland (AfD) co-leader Alice Weidel told reporters, calling the result a “good day for Germany.”
