The right-wing Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party will benefit the most from the debacle surrounding Friedrich Merz’s rejection as chancellor, according to a poll.

Merz, the head of the centre-right CDU party, failed to get elected as chancellor by the parliament at the first attempt on Tuesday, May 7th—an unprecedented failure in modern German history—, and only passed the hurdle in the second round of voting.

According to a poll by daily Bild, 51% of Germans are convinced that the embarrassing spectacle will benefit the AfD.

A large majority of respondents, 57% say that the new chancellor, who will lead a coalition formed of the CDU/CSU alliance and the Social Democrats, will not be able to get rid of this stain that has tainted his image for the rest of his term in office.
