Berlin is once again reeling from violence after a group of Afghans reportedly attacked Syrians in Berlin-Mitte on Friday evening.
The German Press Agency reports that according to police, around twenty men clashed near the Humboldt Forum, leaving one person so severely injured by a ”sharp or pointed object” that he had to be resuscitated at the scene before being rushed to intensive care. Another victim also suffered injuries.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office and the police’s 6th Homicide Division have opened an investigation for attempted murder.
Police confirmed they had received multiple emergency calls reporting the mass brawl. While no details on the weapon were given, witnesses described a chaotic scene involving dozens of men. Authorities have yet to announce arrests.
Police spokesperson Florian Nath stated: “The 6th Homicide Squad has taken over the case. It looks as if a group of Afghans attacked a group of Syrians.”
This was not the first outbreak of violence in the same area. We reported earlier this week, on September 8th, about another brutal incident nearby. Two men were attacked by Afghans on the Friedrichsbrücke at 1:45 a.m. One suffered a stab wound to his lip, the other multiple wounds to his back. Both survived, though they required hospital treatment.
