Diella, a digital assistant designed to tackle corruption, sparks opposition outrage in parliament.

Albanian opposition politicians erupted after Prime Minister Edi Rama introduced an artificial intelligence-based “minister” named Diella during a parliament session to approve the new cabinet.

The AI digital assistant, presented via video and now active on Facebook to answer public questions, is intended to help reduce corruption, nepotism, and conflicts of interest in public procurement.

Opposition MPs denounced Diella as a propaganda tool designed to distract from widespread corruption and organized crime.

Amid the uproar, the parliamentary session lasted just 25 minutes, with 82 Socialist MPs approving the new cabinet and government programme. Opposition MPs boycotted the vote.

Analysts described the situation as unprecedented in Albania’s post-communist parliamentary history. Other observers have linked the gimmick to PM Rama’s bid to join the European Union.
