Organizers of a Gaza-bound flotilla carrying aid and pro-Palestinian activists claimed on Wednesday, September 24, that several of their boats were targeted using drones.
The Global Sumud Flotilla reported more than a dozen explosions around the vessels as they sailed off Greece late on Tuesday, September 23, causing damage from “unidentified objects” dropped on deck.
Polish lawmaker Franek Sterczewski, aboard one of the boats, said 13 attacks hit 10 vessels, including his own. German activist Yasemin Acar added that five vessels were affected and that about 15 drones had been sighted while flotilla radios were jammed and loud music played.
Similar claims were made following a fire onboard one of the ships two weeks ago, prompting the nearby Tunisian authorities to deny any such UAV activity in their waters. Some reports blamed a discarded cigarette for the fire.
In addition to these drone attacks, recent reports highlight internal disputes and resignations over ideological differences among participants, not least whether ‘queer’ activism has a place on the flotilla.
