A Turkish defence ministry source said the fighter jets could be deployed to ensure the security of ther Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Turkey is considering the possibility of sending F-16 fighter jets to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), a territory only recognised by Ankara, as a security measure, a Turkish defence ministry source said on Saturday, days after an Iranian-made drone hit a British base on the island on Monday.

Nicosia said the drone was probably fired by Iran-backed Hezbollah from Lebanon, and not from Iran itself.

Following the incident, several European countries pledged assistance to Cyprus, sending air defences and other military assets.
