A new scandal has rocked Spain’s ruling party: an official of the governing Spanish socialist party PSOE, led by Pedro Sánchez, has resigned amid allegations of sexual harassment, Reuters reported. On Friday evening, Spanish news outlet elDiario published allegations that Francisco Salazar, the institutional coordinator at the Moncloa Palace—the Prime Minister’s office—had sexually harassed female PSOE staff members.
On Saturday, Salazar announced his resignation from his post as deputy secretary of the PSOE’s organisational secretariat. The Socialist Party said it would immediately launch an investigation into the matter, but no formal complaint was made.
The Spanish prime minister, who leads a minority coalition government, has repeatedly come under attack for various scandals surrounding his government. Sánchez has publicly apologised for recent party corruption cases involving senior party figures but rejected both stepping down and calling a new election.
