Australian prime minister Anthony Albanese said his government would invite Israeli president Isaac Herzog to visit Australia following a mass shooting in Sydney that targeted the Jewish community.

In a post on X on Tuesday, Albanese said he had informed Herzog that the Governor-General would issue a formal invitation in line with protocol for the Israeli president to visit as soon as possible.

The decision comes after Islamist gunmen killed 15 people at a Hanukkah event on Bondi Beach on December 14.
