The Austrian government is seeking strict sanctions against migrants who refuse to work. Likewise, those on social assistance numbers will be obliged to learn the language. Against the backdrop of a ballooning welfare bill, proposed benefit cuts would be implemented to incentivise changes.

The measures would involve getting tough on migrants, in the aftermath of a study showing that the majority of welfare recipients in Austria are foreigners, the majority of whom live in Vienna.

Integration Minister Claudia Plakolm (Österreichische Volkspartei) spelled out that

Anyone who wants to stay in Austria must become part of it. They must learn the German language, abide by our laws and values, AND be willing to work.

Unemployment is “poison for integration,” since it prevents contacts, blocks language acquisition, and places a massive burden on the social system, she added.

The programme is scheduled to start on Wednesday, May 28th.
