Thomas Oberreiter stepped down after being linked to an anonymous blog featuring misogynistic and graphic content written under a female pseudonym.

Austria’s representative to the European Union has resigned amid claims he authored a misogynistic blog using a female alias.

The Austrian newspaper Der Standard reported that officials from the foreign ministry confronted Thomas Oberreiter—who had held the Brussels post since 2023—after a media outlet raised the issue. Oberreiter has denied the accusations, according to the paper.

Archived entries from the blog, written under the pseudonym “Caro,” include a graphic account of a nightclub sexual assault told from a woman’s point of view.

The Austrian investigative site Fass ohne Boden was the first to reveal that a high-ranking diplomat had allegedly maintained a blog for years containing explicit, misogynistic content and descriptions of rape, all under a false female identity.

Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger was notified on Saturday, leading to an internal probe. “The ambassador requested to be dismissed for personal reasons on Monday,” a ministry spokesperson said.

Austria’s EU mission declined to confirm whether Oberreiter was still in post at the time. The foreign ministry also refrained from giving further information, stating only that an ambassador had stepped down.
