The new swimwear rule is meant to keep pools cleaner, but some Green Party politicians claim the ban is unfair to Muslim women.

A new dress code has been introduced by some pools in Baden-Württemberg to improve water hygiene. This means that burkinis—swimsuits covering body and hair, designed for Muslim women—are banned in the future.

The move drew criticism from area Greens, who claim it unfairly discriminates against women who wear ‘burkinis’ for religious reasons.

But the pools say the change in dress code applies not only to Muslim swimwear but also to other bulky clothing, like oversize swim trunks with pockets that can hold tissues, food scraps and other items threatening to contaminate the water.

In addition, some pools no longer allow swimwear made of cotton, but only from synthetic fibers.
