Hungary has rejected Ukraine’s accession to the EU because “enlargement is not a matter of political sympathy, but a strategic responsibility.”

In an interview with Euronews, Balázs Orbán, the political director of the Hungarian Prime Minister, expanded on the Hungarian position regarding Ukraine’s bid to join the European Union.

Orbán stated that Ukraine is currently a country at war, and in this situation, its accelerated accession to the EU would not be a solution, but a further extension of the conflict.

He stressed that while Hungary respects Ukraine’s ambition to join, “EU enlargement is not a matter of political sympathy, but a strategic responsibility.” He reiterated that the Hungarian conservative government represents the interests of the Hungarian people, “who have clearly rejected Ukraine’s accession to the EU.”

As we reported, in a national consultation in Hungary that saw the participation of some 2.3 million citizens the overwhelming majority, 95% of respondents said they oppose Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.

As far as the sanctions on Russia are concerned, Balázs Orbán noted that they have not brought a solution any closer for three years now, while Europe’s economy is suffering as a result of them.
