French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot on Saturday, August 30th criticized the U.S. administration for not allowing members of the Palestinian Authority (PA) who were set to take part in the UN General Assembly in September, into the country.
At a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Copenhagen, Denmark Barrot said “A UN General Assembly meeting … should not be subject to any restrictions on access.”
The barring of the Palestinian officials comes after France, along with Australia, Canada, and the UK, has said it is ready to recognise a ‘Palestinian state’ at the annual gathering of world leaders at the UN headquarters in New York.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday ordered the denial and revoking of visas revoked for members of the PA and the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) for national security reasons.
Of major EU member states, longtime Israel allies the Netherlands and Germany have resisted recognising a Palestinian state, sharing the position that such a move would “send the wrong signal.”
The Palestinian Authority called for the United States to reverse its decision, which it said “stands in clear contradiction to international law and the UN Headquarters Agreement.”
