The Free State of Bavaria will pay approximately €1 million in rent for an asylum shelter in Markt Schwaben that has never been occupied. The building, leased in 2023 to house asylum seekers, remained empty after protests from local residents. The lease continues until September 2030 and contains no exit clause.
According to the Ebersberg District Office, the basic rent is around €20 per square meter for 600 square meters, significantly higher than the local average of €16 per square meter. This amounts to €12,000 per month, or €144,000 per year, which the state will pay for the next seven years.
The exact rental costs only became public after the publisher of the Münchner Merkur filed a lawsuit with the Munich Administrative Court, which revealed that the lease was more expensive than previously stated.
While the government of Upper Bavaria now offers the space for office or commercial use, it remains unused, leaving taxpayers to cover the costs. On the same site, a larger building now accommodates 66 people at a monthly rent of €18,000. Plans are also underway for a second asylum shelter in Markt Schwaben, to be paid for also with taxpayer money.
