A court in Brabant Wallon has sentenced two brothers to 30 months imprisonment for running a cannabis trafficking operation inside Ittre prison during 2022 and 2023.
The brothers, both inmates at the time of the offence, received cannabis during family visits and resold it to other prisoners. Payments were made by buyers’ relatives and transferred to the bank account of the brothers’ sister, investigators found. Both men had extensive criminal records and previous convictions for drug-related offences.
Their sister and mother—neither of whom had prior convictions—were also prosecuted for procuring drugs and helping facilitate the trafficking network. The court handed them community service sentences of 120 hours and 50 hours respectively.
The exposure of these security flaws within the Belgian state will add to its growing—and unwelcome—reputation as a European narcotics hub.
