Bart De Wever is demanding €10 billion in savings by 2030

Belgium’s Prime Minister Bart De Wever has warned that he will resign unless the country’s five-party coalition approves a cost-cutting budget on Thursday, November 6th. The Flemish leader is pushing for €10 billion in savings by 2030 to tackle Belgium’s soaring national debt.

The proposal includes labor market reforms, pension cuts and limits on unemployment benefits. However, left-leaning coalition partners oppose the plan, demanding higher taxes on the wealthy instead.

De Wever’s threat is seen by some as a high-stakes bluff, but continued deadlock could plunge Belgium into another political crisis. With geopolitical tensions high and drone-related security issues under investigation, observers warn that a government collapse would weaken Belgium’s image both domestically and in Europe.
