A Belgian security service officer was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of espionage. His home was searched the same day, Politico reports, and he was later released under strict conditions.
The charges reportedly relate to spying for China. The man, whose exact role within Belgium’s national security apparatus has not been disclosed, is believed to have been recruited to gain access to international diplomatic circles in Brussels.
The arrest comes amid mounting pressure on Belgian intelligence agencies. In February, Le Soir reported that Chinese hackers infiltrated state security systems between 2021 and 2023 — the largest data breach in the agency’s history.
