Thousands of people are expected to join demonstrations in Brussels as part of an attempted general strike opposing government cutbacks—disrupting airports and public transport.

A nationwide strike in Belgium on Tuesday, October 14th, grounded flights and disrupted public transport as tens of thousands prepared to protest in Brussels.

Brussels and Charleroi airports canceled flights due to staff walkouts and metro, tram, and bus services faced delays. The strike targets government plans to reform pensions and cut spending to reduce the budget deficit, which unions say unfairly burdens ordinary citizens.

Police warned of disruption in central Brussels. The protest adds pressure on ‘weak’ Prime Minister Bart De Wever’s coalition, which failed to approve a budget on Monday.
