Belgium’s commitment to a Palestinian state mirrors similar pledges from France, Australia and the UK—while angering Israel.

Belgium will recognise the State of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly in September, its foreign minister announced on Tuesday, September 2nd.

Maxime Prévot declared on X

Palestine will be recognised by Belgium at the UN session! And firm sanctions are being imposed against the Israeli government.

The UN session is scheduled to take place in New York on September 9–23.

The move echoes French president Emmanuel Macron, who first announced that France would recognise a Palestinian state on April 9, later confirmed in July.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reacted on X, calling the idea “a great mistake” and warning that the only purpose of a Palestinian state would be “the destruction of Israel.”

Following France, Australia will also recognise a Palestinian state, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced in August. The UK has made similar pledges in recent weeks.
