Ahead of the 2026 election, the jailing of the former president has left Brazil’s conservative bloc without a unifying figure.

Brazil’s Supreme Court has ordered former president Jair Bolsonaro to begin serving a 27-year prison sentence for plotting a coup to overturn the 2022 election. Bolsonaro was moved to a secured room in Brasilia police headquarters after violating the terms of his house arrest by tampering with his ankle monitor.

Prosecutors say the coup plan collapsed only because military commanders refused to join. Several close allies also began serving long sentences, while former intelligence chief Alexandre Ramagem fled to the United States.

Bolsonaro’s lawyers argue he should serve his term at home due to health problems stemming from a 2018 stabbing but the Court says detention is necessary.

The ex-president’s imprisonment leaves Brazil’s conservative camp without a central figure ahead of the 2026 election, deepening political uncertainty.
