New campaign prioritises LGBT symbolism over practical governance, opponents argue.

Bremen’s Green Party has launched a campaign to redesign pedestrian traffic lights with gay and lesbian couple symbols, saying the move will promote LGBT visibility.

According to the party, the traffic lights would serve as a message of solidarity and inclusivity.

The Greens are also pushing for a permanent rainbow-colored crosswalk at a central location. Both the traffic lights and the rainbow crosswalk are expected to be installed by the end of the year if the petition succeeds.

The campaign has also taken aim at German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who recently declined to fly the rainbow flag over the Bundestag ahead of the International Day Against Homophobia, saying the German parliament is “not a circus tent”. In response, the Bremen Greens stated in their petition: “We want to turn Bremen into a circus tent.”

The goal is to collect at least 2,000 signatures before the list is handed over to the Green parliamentary group on August 23. As of now, the petition has gathered 84 signatures online.
