UK ‘Net Zero’ Energy Secretary said the Middle East conflict underscores the need to reduce reliance on volatile fossil fuel markets.

The United Kingdom announced plans on Friday, March 13th to speed up the development of nuclear power as part of its strategy to meet its net zero and energy security targets, with the country heavily dependent on natural gas.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said the ongoing Middle East conflict highlights the need to

go further and faster to build the clean energy we need to get off volatile fossil fuel markets.

British governments have tried to refocus on nuclear power since the war in Ukraine began, citing the need to replace ageing power stations and reduce dependence on imported fuels.

The reforms, expected to be completed by the end of 2027, aim to simplify nuclear regulation, including certain environmental assessments that are “overly complex” and “bureaucratic.” The government emphasized that the approach will be

smarter regulation: proportionate, focused on real risk, rooted in evidence, and designed to effectively protect nature and biodiversity.

The UK has some of the highest energy prices in Europe, largely owing to its dependence on natural gas.
