Belgian customs intercepted nearly nine tonnes of illegal drugs in 2025, driven by a surge in cannabis shipments from North America and Thailand.

Seizures of illegal drugs at Brussels Airport more than doubled in 2025, according to Belgian customs authorities, with the increase largely attributed to a surge in cannabis imports from Thailand, the United States, and Canada. Officials reported that a total of approximately nine tonnes of narcotics were intercepted during the year, including eight tonnes of cannabis.

“Companies seek to sell their products in territories where they make more money,” Belgium customs chief Kristian Vanderwaeren explained, adding that Europe offers a more profitable market than the United States or Canada.

Authorities said the smuggled drugs arrived through multiple channels: hidden in freight cargo, sent in small parcels by post, or carried in passenger luggage.

“We can’t have any illusions that there aren’t large quantities that slip by us.” Vanderwaeren said.

Belgium has long served as a key entry point for illegal substances into the European market, particularly through the Port of Antwerp. The spike at Brussels Airport comes amid a broader crackdown on drug trafficking in the country. Recent operations in cities such as Kortrijk and Ghent, as well as cooperation with South American authorities, have led to multiple arrests and the seizure of drugs including cocaine, hashish, speed, and cannabis.

Beyond Belgium’s borders, Peruvian police and customs forces seized 3.4 tonnes of cocaine hidden inside banana shipments destined for Belgium.
