European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas met with political leaders in the capital of Azerbaijan on Friday, April 25th. While the Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission went about her business almost unnoticed, the trip has raised some eyebrows back at her Brussels base.
Pro-EU website Politico grumbled that “Europe’s response to Azerbaijan’s aggression has been tepid for too long.” Diversity-and-inclusion-driven O(pen) C(aucasus) Media described the trip as ‘controversial.’ Maybe the Brussels loyalists are right, for once, about this ‘diplomatic blind spot’ of their own making.
In recent years, Azerbaijan has:
- violated ceasefires with Armenia;
- been condemned in the European Parliament for its military aggression;
- “tortured” Armenian prisoners;
- bombed Armenian schools and hospitals;
- prepared for land-grabs, in defiance of international law.
Despite some EU muttering about its eastern near-neighbour, the broader relationship is one of new gas contracts and member states keeping quiet. That’s why it’s surprising to see some of the pro-Brussels media waking up to the dark side of the current ‘successful and fruitful dialogue’ between Azerbaijan and the EU.
