The European Union will take part in this week’s inaugural meeting of U.S. president Donald Trump’s Board of Peace, although a representative insisted on Monday, February 16th that Brussels would not be joining the body as a formal member.

Dubravka Šuica, the European Commissioner for the Mediterranean, will travel to Washington to represent the EU at the meeting this Thursday.

EU spokesperson Guillaume Mercier clarified the nature of the visit, stating:

She will participate in the Board of Peace meeting specifically for the session dedicated to Gaza. Let me stress that the European Commission is not becoming a member of the Board of Peace.

Mercier added that the EU executive is participating as part of its “long-standing commitment” to the implementation of the Gaza ceasefire and “to support the reconstruction and post-conflict recovery in Gaza.”
