Brussels police have arrested 14 people suspected of involvement in recent shootings in the West police zone, where 13 shootings occurred in July and August. Four people were injured and several buildings were targeted.
Authorities seized nine handguns, three machine guns and two hunting rifles during 12 searches. Eight suspects were detained and one minor was placed in a youth institution. Investigations are ongoing to determine links between the firearms and the local drug scene.
Brussels police aim to fight rising gun violence by adding more patrols, deploying motorised units, and focusing on key areas, working with federal police. The moves take place against the backdrop of the Belgian ‘Plan for Major Cities,’ announced earlier this month.
