German lawmakers are likely to elect Friedrich Merz as chancellor in early May 2025. His CDU/CSU electoral bloc has sealed a coalition agreement with the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD), despite clear-cut, contrary voter preferences.
An official statement described Assembly president, Julia Kloeckner as
preparing to convene the German Bundestag for the election of the federal chancellor … on Tuesday, May 6th.
Why he topped the polls in February’s national elections with 28.5% of the vote, Merz is polling badly as a potential head of state—despite having yet to form the new government. Questionable changes to Germany’s constitutional ‘debt brake’ and maintaining the ‘firewall’ against Alternative für Deutschland are both eating into his remaining support.
