A militant Green escaped with just a warning, after a Hamburg court ruled on his actions in a 2023 action that cost more than €130,000 in operational damages.

A 21-year-old climate activist has avoided criminal penalties—despite causing hundreds of thousands of euros worth of damage during a high-profile airport blockade.

On April 7th, the Hamburg District Court found the defendant guilty of disrupting public services, property damage, trespassing, and resisting arrest. However, despite the gravity of the incident—which paralyzed Hamburg Airport for four hours in July 2023—the judge issued only a formal warning under juvenile criminal law.

This decision has sparked fresh debate over the leniency shown to “New Generation” (formerly Last Generation) activists, especially given this defendant’s prior record of highway blockades.

The July 2023 incident saw ten activists breach the airport perimeter by cutting through security fencing, before gluing themselves to the runway.

The consequences were huge: 68 flights were cancelled, 14 were diverted, and more than 8,500 passengers were left stranded.

While the criminal court was lenient, the financial reality for the activists is much grimmer; a separate civil ruling from November 2025 has already ordered the group to pay €400,000 in damages to Eurowings, with the estimated total legal liabilities for the ten individuals set to reach €1.1 million.
