The trial of a Congolese national who is accused of seriously injuring a female police officer in November 2024 during a police operation in Cologne began on Monday, May 12th. The 40-year-old man bit off part of the policewoman’s ear, making her permanently disabled after a series of operations to reattach the severed part failed.

The man had attracted attention at the time for assaulting passersby. Witnesses called the police after he allegedly attacked several people with a key. According to the indictment, when the police arrived, the man pushed the 26-year-old female officer to the ground and then bit off part of one of her ears.

The defense lawyer claims his client, an African man with multiple previous convictions, cannot recall details of the incident due to heavy cocaine consumption the previous evening.

The trial is scheduled to end today, and a verdict is expected later this month.
