After months of tolerating ‘pro-Palestinian’ marches and demonstrations, one local authority leader has finally asked the police to step in. The city of Southend is bracing itself for a Gaza protest on Saturday, August 30—one where the usual ‘antizionist’ mask has slipped even further than usual, revealing something sinister beneath.

The city council leader was probably not alone in noticing the high volume of antisemitic commentary accompanying the publicity for the demonstration, both on social media and as graffiti. Daniel Cowan describes

an event that is being promoted as a protest in an “horrific Zionist area” that people would have “witnessed” had they attended the last demo.

An earlier protest in April targeted the Westcliff district, home to a synagogue and several Jewish families. That march, held during Passover, passed by one synagogue and near others while participants shouted at Jewish residents to “stop killing children” and displayed banners supporting Hamas, a proscribed terrorist group.

Cowan described the planned August event as a repeat performance designed to harass Jews in Southend, criticising what he called the “hands off” approach to the previous demonstration.
