ČEZ has bought a 20% stake in Rolls-Royce SMR to help build small nuclear reactors in the UK and Czechia.

Czech energy company ČEZ has acquired roughly 20% of UK-based firm Rolls-Royce SMR and will now help build up to three small nuclear reactors in the UK, with plans for a similar project in Czechia starting at the Temelín site in the 2030s.

ČEZ may also help with technology through its subsidiaries and has plans for future reactors to replace former coal power plants.

The Rolls-Royce SMR, produced by the company of the same name, is a 470 MW pressurized water reactor with a 60-year lifespan and strong safety features. ČEZ plans to install SMRs with a total capacity of 3 GW by 2050.

In early 2025, ČEZ reported a 7% rise in profits and highlighted major progress in nuclear energy, including new units at Dukovany.
