Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala has slammed the European Union’s bureaucracy as not just an economic drag—but a growing security threat. Speaking at the “Czechia at a Crossroads” conference on April 15, Fiala warned that excessive regulation and overreach from Brussels are stifling growth and endangering national security.

“Cumbersomeness and excess regulation, all of these have hindered and are hindering our growth. But today, these factors are no longer just a threat to growth, they are a threat to our security,” he said.

Fiala took particular aim at the EU Commission’s climate policy, calling its goal of a 90% emissions cut by 2040 “disproportionate pressure on our industry” and describing the targets as “unrealistic.”

The Prime Minister said there is a shift happening in Brussels and called for action, seeing this moment as an opportunity. He highlighted that “people in the EU were passive in the past but now they realize the problems of the current elite leading the bloc, and now people are willing to act against it.”
