A Danish citizen suspected of spying on Jewish sites and individuals in Berlin on behalf of Iranian intelligence has been arrested in Denmark, German prosecutors announced on Tuesday, July 1st.
The man, identified only as Ali S., was taken into custody last Thursday in the city of Aarhus. His arrest followed a tip-off from Germany’s domestic intelligence agency.
According to federal prosecutors, Iranian intelligence recruited him earlier this year to gather information on Jewish locations and individuals in the German capital. In June, he reportedly scouted three different properties in Berlin—activity that prosecutors say may have been in preparation for further operations, potentially including terrorist attacks.
Ali S. has been charged with working for a foreign intelligence service. He is expected to be extradited to Germany, where a judge will decide whether he should remain in custody while formal charges are prepared. No date for the extradition has been announced.
