Two students were killed and at least nine other people injured in a shooting at Brown University in Rhode Island on Saturday, December 13th at around 16:05 local time.
The attack triggered an immediate response from campus and city police. Several of the wounded are reported to be in critical condition in hospital.
As emergency services continue to assess the situation, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said the number of casualties could still rise.
The suspect remains at large. Police described the attacker as a man dressed entirely in black who fled the scene on foot. An individual was initially taken into custody but later released upon completing investigations.
A student on campus described how
We stayed away from the windows and when the police came we were told to drop our bags, raise our hands and then a search was carried out on the floor before we were led out of the library.
A shelter-in-place order remains in effect for the greater Brown University area, with authorities urging residents and students to stay indoors and avoid the campus. As the investigation continues, President Donald Trump said he was briefed on the incident.
The attack follows a thwarted plot to carry out an armed assault on the campus police department at the University of Delaware.
